The ambient air is pulled into the cabinet and passed through a HEPA filter. The filtered air is passed over the experiment or devices and exhausted directly onto the worker. In other words, clean benches provide only product protection against contamination but DO NOT afford protection to the worker. Consequently, laminar flow clean benches should never be used when handling drug formulations, infectious materials, radioactivity or any other potentially hazardous materials. For such purposes, a biological safety cabinet that is designed to provide both product and worker protection should be used. Clean benches can sometimes be termed as cell culture hoods, tissue culture hoods or laminar flow hoods.
